Whilst it is now mandatory to wear face coverings in indoor public places such as supermarkets and other shops, retailers must still continue to do everything they can to ensure that safe social distancing can be achieved. There has been concern that some supermarkets in particular have moved away from some of the safeguards they had put in place at the start of the pandemic. However, this is not the case everywhere and I know that many of our stores continue to work hard to provide a safe and positive shopping environment.
I receive regular briefings from some of the supermarkets outlining how its stores are proactively taking steps to ensure compliance with the latest guidance. Supermarkets have an important role to play – both to ensure they comply with Welsh Government legislation and guidance and to help reinforce the public health messages about Covid 19.
The Minister for Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs Lesley Griffiths meets regularly with food retailers and continues to raise concerns around reports of social distancing breaches. She has also written to supermarkets about adhering to the rules in Wales. Covid has not gone away and everyone has a responsibility to maintain social distancing.
